Before or after 2021 — the card decides

UK driving licence in France

Two British neighbours in the same village can be in completely different positions. The difference is a date printed on the licence.

Brexit split British licence holders in France into two groups, and the dividing line is the issue date printed on the card.

Licence issued before 2021

It is treated like a European licence. No exchange is required. It stays recognised in France for as long as it remains valid.

Exchange only becomes compulsory in specific trigger situations :

That last point catches people out. A licence lost on holiday turns an optional formality into a compulsory procedure, on the clock.

Licence issued in 2021 or later

It is treated as an ordinary non-EU licence. The United Kingdom is on the reciprocity list for all categories, so the exchange is possible — but it must be applied for within one year of your first residence permit or validated long-stay visa.

Since 12 May 2026 the exchange is no longer free : a €40 electronic tax stamp is required (€20 in French Guiana). Many guides online still describe it as free.

One advantage the British have

A UK licence is written in English and French on the same card in many formats, and in any case the administration handles it routinely. Compared with a licence in Arabic, Cyrillic or Mandarin, the paperwork is lighter.

Note that we could not identify the exact legal text that establishes the before/after-2021 distinction. The rule itself is confirmed on the official French public service pages ; the underlying instrument — bilateral agreement or transitional provision of the withdrawal agreement — we could not locate. We mention it because you may be asked for it at a counter.

Insurance

British drivers moving to France routinely arrive with decades of no-claims bonus, and discover it does not follow them. No French text obliges an insurer to recognise a UK no-claims discount, and there is no reciprocity in the other direction either.

Bring your written no-claims proof from your UK insurer before you leave — it is far harder to obtain afterwards. More in car insurance with no French driving history.

Your UK licence is accepted, whatever its issue date.

Frequently asked questions

My licence was issued in 2019. Do I need to exchange it?

No. Licences issued before 2021 are treated like EU licences and need no exchange while they remain valid.

My licence was issued in 2022. What changes?

It follows the non-EU rule: exchange must be applied for within one year of your first residence permit. The UK is on the reciprocity list for all categories.

I lost my pre-2021 licence in France. What now?

Loss, theft or damage is one of the trigger events that makes the exchange compulsory, even for a pre-2021 licence.

Does the exchange cost anything?

Yes, since 12 May 2026: a €40 electronic tax stamp, €20 in French Guiana.

Will my UK no-claims bonus be recognised?

No French text requires it. Some insurers will look at written proof from your UK insurer. Obtain that proof before you leave the UK.

Can I drive while my exchange is processed?

Yes. You receive a secure deposit certificate valid for four months, which lets you keep driving while your French licence is produced.
